The museum collection – the largest in north Wales – results from the amalgamation of a Victorian sea captain’s private museum, the collections of Bangor University and the Gwynedd county collection, including recent finds from archaeological excavations. The displays cover archaeology – with valuable prehistoric artefacts from the Neolithic, and Bronze Age periods – plus a wide variety of Roman and more recent material, including some fascinating social history survivals. The finest selection of Welsh furniture outside St Fagan’s National History Museum accompanies important examples of Welsh costume and agricultural bygones. Temporary exhibitions showcase objects from the reserve collection.
On the ground floor is a shop, and an art gallery which hosts frequently changing exhibitions. These are often brought in from larger museums but many originate in Bangor and display work by our lively local art community. Music and poetry evenings and children’s activities are organised.
The Friends support all this activity by fund-raising and work behind the scenes. They also provide a stimulating programme of events for members – there are social events, lunch-time lectures and excursions to local and more distant sites and museums.
