Sian Caffell

We are sad to report the death of our committee member Sian White (Caffell). Many people will remember Sian from Bookland in Bangor, but she was also a musician, chorister, archaeologist, mother of Bethan and Gwenllian, and passionate supporter of the museum and of the Friends, alongside her mother Gwenno Caffell. We will miss her presence and contributions to our activities.

May 2013 Newsletter

The final bid to the Lottery fund for money to convert the old Town Hall to accomodate the Museum will be submitted in June for a September decision.  The Friends was nominated in December to be one of the three local charities to receive money from the Waitrose store in Menai Bridge.  As a result, we have been awarded £482 – our thanks go out to Waitrose, Mandy Abrahams who sponsored us and all of you who put your green tokens in our box! While on this subject, we have also received money from the winding up of Segontium Cyf, for which we thank the trustees.

Our First Trip by car will be on Sunday May 12th, when we shall be visiting Carreglwyd, an Anglesey country house, garden and woodland which was begun in 1634, with later additions.  It was the home of Lady Maria Reade, one of the three Remarkable Women of the Museum’s current exhibition. There is a modest charge for entry and a conducted tour.

Assemble for 3pm. The house is reached from the A5025 road from Valley towards Cemais and Amlwch; turn off to the left at Llanfaethlu, drive straight through the village towards the sea and the turn to Carreglwyd is to the right, shortly after leaving the village.

Our Second Trip by car will visit Blaenau Ffestiniog on Saturday June 15th, meeting outside the railway station at 11.00am. We shall be looking at the town centre regeneration scheme, with its sculptures, and visiting the converted mill studio of Falcon Hildred, a local artist with a strong interest in preserving and   recording  our   industrial heritage, especially of Blaenau. There may be time to see other local sites too, such as the Orthodox church.

If you need to contact the Friends, ring  01248 601342

A date for your diary: the Christmas Party will be on November 16th.

The Summer Exhibition in the Museum will display ‘Salem’,  shown below, on loan from the Lady Lever Art Gallery. It will explore the significance of this iconic image to Welsh people – do you have a copy of it hung in your home?  If so the Museum would like to hear from you on 01248 353368.

Your subscription for the 2013-14 year is now due.  A membership form is enclosed – please keep up your membership as the Museum needs its Friends and we cannot afford to keep sending Newsletters to those who are in arrears with their subscriptions.

The  Friends’ ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING will be held on Thursday May 16th at 7.30pm, in the Museum.  Members are urged to attend, and will be very welcome – come and  tell us what you think.

**We have, with regret, to propose to the meeting a rise in subscriptions for the year after this one, 2014-15 – a minimum of £10 for individuals, £12 for families and £5 for the unwaged; this has been forced upon us by the escalating cost of running the Friends.

After the business meeting,  there will be refreshments followed by a discussion on the plans for the new Museum in the old Bishop’s Palace/Town Hall led by our curator Esther Roberts and Nest Thomas from Gwynedd Council. Detailed plans and drawings  will be available for you to see what the new Museum will be like.
