Where are they now?

A few carved slate fireplaces are still in situ, cherished by their owners but not many.

As people have ‘improved’ their homes a large number of these fireplaces have been ripped out.  Many have been smashed up as worthless.  Others have been re-used in as variety of ways.

Some are on display in museums such as this one at the Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery

Some are held by the Llandegai and Llanllechid Archaeolgical Society.

Most of the information gathered about these slates was done in the late 1970′s and early 1980′s.  If you know about a carved slate fireplace surround then let us know – better still send us a photograph with details of where it is.
